oldest person to become a Grand Master?
... Does anyone know who the oldest person to ever qualify and pass the norms and earn the Grand Master title? ...
Leif Øgaard earned his third norm at age 55, 25 years after his second norm.
arent the 3 norms supposed to be done within a certain time limit?
... I was really hoping to find some fodder to throw back at people that presume a person is too old when they reach a certain age. ...
In general, those players earning the GM title later in life, were probably IMs in their teens or early twenties. I'll never claim someone who wasn't that strong when young won't ever become a GM, but it is a statistical long shot.
yea this is important, those rare souls who become gm later usually hit master level fairly young and life likely got in the way. later GM's who werent master by like age 20 are fairly rare and for GM's who picked up the game after 18, the only confirmed example i have stumbled upon is mihai Suba who apparently picked up the game at 19!

There is a time limit. You can't earn norms if you are no longer alive.
