You made an illegal move. You should take it back and make another move.
Moving Into Check
Well, officially, you are allowed to take it back, but you should do another move with the same piece - because you touched it. With the king, it isn't rather nice to do that, but if it is an informal game - one can deal with its opponent to just do another move.
In blitz/rapid chess (with fast time controls), one can claim after his/her opponent made an illegal move, but this doesn't seems to be the case.
You are correct, you cannot make a move that would place yourself into check, the same as you cannot stay in check. This is also why you cannot place your opponent in check using your King, as it would also place you in check.

Thank you Maarten. I guess it is that simple. It just did not feel right. I felt like i should have had to pay for that mistake and not given a second chance

I am a beginner. I have played very infrequently over the last 30 years without ever knowing anything , but how the pieces move. No strategy. I did not even know my 10 year old daughter knew how to play until a week ago. She learned to play from a boy at school. She can beat me, but cannot beat him. I have become infatuated with the game. I am learning all the basic strategies and sharing them with her. I want her to be able to beat him when school starts. We are having a great time learning together. I knew chess was a complicated game, but I had know idea how incredible it was. Anyway......I am an offensive player and usually lose because of it. My daughter is a defensive player and usually beats me. The last game we played, I was really aggressive and the board was looking great for me. She was not going to win or so I thought. My King was in it's original spot. I had not moved it. We were playing more on her side of the board. I had captured more of her key pieces. I had been thinking ahead and setting up my moves to capture more of her pieces. I moved my bishop to a spot to capture another one of her pieces. When I did, I left a clear lane open in front of my King. My daughters Queen was at the opposite end of that clear lane all the way back to the edge of the board. I had moved into check. It was my terrible move. We were not sure what the rule was on moving into. She had not called check because I had moved into. I felt that it was my huge mistake and surely my opponent should be able to take advantage of it. So I said you win because I unknowingly moved into check. I have since read that you cannot move into check. How can that be? I made the mistake of unknowingly moving into check and it only seems right that I deserved to lose. What am I missing? thank you.
