Low time warning

Hi!

Is there a way to get a warning sound when your timer is below 1 minute or something?

I know about the 20 second timer, but that's useless to me in 90% of cases, since 20 seconds = 0 seconds unless i have a forced mate on my opponent.

Even if you could, you shouldn't. Time management is another skill that you should work on in chess, just like any other. You should strive to be constantly aware of how much time you have, how much time your opponent has, etc.

Yea, I agree that there shouldn’t be alarms in the clock.

HOWEVER, If chess clocks with alarms aren’t allowed then I hope that it is also not allowed for players to set their wrist watch alarm that beeps like a timer. Although I don’t know how a watch could actually know when 1 minute of game is left, since it does not know how many seconds or minutes have been used so far. But a watch or any electronic device that beeps for any reason should be prohibited by rules, not just ringing phones.

You are completely right. In fact, lets just remove the clock altogether. You need to work on the time management skill right?

Come to think of it, lets remove the board also! All you need is the coordinates anyway. Another skill to work on in chess!

Lets also ban chairs. Need to work on those core muscles.

Pulpofeira

You don't need the coordinates.

If anyone has a helpful answer then that would be appreciated. If not, then any suggestions of other chess sites with this functionality are also appreciated.

IKnowTheMeaningOfLif

they give their opinions because they dont have an answer

Yes. Play long time controls... I believe it warns you at 1 minute. But I haven't played any rapid in a while, and I've never had to get low on time in rapid anyways.

But otherwise,

No.

As someone who plays 5 minute 0 increment games pretty much exclusively I wish there was an option to set a low time warning for 1 minute. The amount of games I lose from winning positions when I realise that my time is 20 seconds against like 2 minutes is crazy.  I also don't think its that invalid a request, chess.com already offers a low time warning, so why not one that can be customised appropriate to the time control you're playing on.

This might not work in 10-second bullet games.

dolaimi

I have developed my own chrome extension to give me low time alerts (announcement) for the last 10 seconds of a bullet/blitz game on lichess. I am trying now to do the same for chess.com

Arcanto

I usually play bullet 1 minute 1 second increment.

I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE if the clock get red or something when I have 5 seconds or less

Settings - live - low time warning

makes a noise and turns your clock red. It’s just in the settings, guys.

SlackBladder0

chess.com, please add some sound that people can actually hear when focused.
the way things are now, I am mostly inclined to just play on lichess, where they have a proper sound.
did someone also make an extension for firefox for this?

Have you gotten around to this at all?

arielpanelli

Yeah, I also play bullet or 1+1, I would like to know when my time is below 10 seconds, many times I can not take advantage of the +1 because I do not notice when my time is reaching zero.

Also.. I guess like me, many players play chess every time they had few minutes to spare between activities, this mean we are not super focus on the match, is not a tournament either.

If we should be 100% focus , then most people who play just to pass time would no longer do it because they would lose ranking for no reason.

Pulpofeira

Somehow I read that last paragraph as a contradiction in terms.

You can use my response here to get the sound warning: https://www.chess.com/forum/view/help-support/timer-warnings

In Rapid chess, it plays a sound when you have 1 minute left, but only if you have low time warning enabled in settings. In Blitz, it gives you the warning with only 20 seconds left, which drives me nuts.

The absence of time warnings in speed chess is so disappointing This is where Li Chess and other online interfaces are superior. They do have good time warning mechanisms. That is why I will not be renewing my annual membership here.
