Losing by time out

Sort:

When 10 minute games timeout I almost always lose even when I am ahead on points and when I am either white or black.  And I play fast. It’s not that I am taking too long. I play faster than opponents almost all the time.  It doesn’t make any sense . Can someone explain how the timeout rules work?  Thanks

Short answer: when you hit 0:00 on your clock you lose, no matter what the board position is.

If you dislike losing on time, then play with increment.
That always gives you time to win a won position or draw a drawn position.

Not exactly, if your opponent does not have sufficient checkmating material then it's a draw.

Yep, my friend told me that as well, I just wanted to (over)simplify so it would be easier to understand.

I feel like the devs completely screwed up on how they made their time limits work

Yes it is annoying and I understand clock is part of the game but I really wihs there were 10+3 timecontrol or something, i mean yes there is 15 minutes with incriment but that is a considarable jump in time available

strawberrygasoline

there shouldnt even BE independent time limits. Just kick the guy out if he's not playing after 60 seconds or something. I'm tired of the time continuously lowering even though I'm actively trying to play, like let us play stop trying to ruin the game

@9
There is 10|5 available under more time controls.

@10
You can set custom time control 0|60

strawberrygasoline

oh i never tried custom games

so you want to kick people off after 60 seconds? i dont think you understand how time limits work.

i dont think you are gonna get anywhere by trying to start fights in every forum

strawberrygasoline

oh so you're saying you don't wish to start any more fights with me and you're willing to call quits?

strawberrygasoline

answer my question. Do you wish tono longer fight me or do you wish to continue?

Cleo_141414

While having a material advantage can be a good thing, it is irrelevant if your opponent can draw from a lost position, checkmate you, or flag you/run you out of time. Often enough it is the exact opposite of what you are saying. To much time is spent on getting a material advantage, and then they get flagged because of not enough time to use the material advantage. This is what is meant by time management.

Faster means a part of a second to minutes. While one may be faster, at some point people start spending more time thinking of how to make a good move, either to create an advantage/or get out of trouble. When this occurs often enough one falls behind on time. Time advantage can quickly get eaten up when thinking, and end up with your opponent having the advantage.

What is very common, is that people go by feelings of what takes place. Feelings are most often incorrect. I did not take notes, and I may have not been looking at the correct clock on a few because I was flipping through your games extremely fast, from Oct. 9th through present. I did not see one game that you lost on time, that you were not behind on time from the start.
