Countries don't play chess. People play chess.
India certainly has some excellent players at this time

its true (at least most people think). Chess has it's roots in Chatarangam, which is a four player version of chess (it's still there). it was created during the Mourya or gupta empire, to show to the rajmaatha (king's mom) how a king died. in war.
