I'm Stagnating in Rapid

Sort:
Koh-i-noor

I've been stuck at 1700 for about two months now. In the beginning of the year, I was 1000, by may, I was 1700, I fell back to 1600, and now I'm 1700. I've been stuck for about two months now. What should I do?

Eventually, everyone stagnates. 1700 is above average even for serious players (above the active live tournament average, and above 98% of people here). It's possible that's all you are going to get without a LOT of effort.

Well i tell ya what, Im soo stagnant i am actually struggling to increase my rating even after learning the 69 moves of theory in the ruy lopez. You are a different kind of stagnant, For you see, Opening theory is the only thing keeping my rating afloat. You should be happy you dont blunder like me!

YOU DAMN AMERICANS HAVE IT EAZY, A DOLLAR FOR ME IS 37 HRYVEN! A 30 DOLLAR COURSE IS GONNA COST ME MY KIDNEY!

Obviously im not even close to being 1700 but i've heard several instructors say that the problem with stagnation can often be playing too often. They say that taking and 2-3 day break every once in a while very much helps with faster improvement. Its like working out. You cant work out your same muscles every day or you will be stagnant. Working out the same muscles every other day can result in fast improvement. The same principle applies to chess, but you can play more often than every other day. I typically play six out of seven days a week, and im definitely improving, but im not on your level of course.

Improving at chess is usually not easy. If you can afford few lessons, I would advise getting a coach. I can teach you how to think during the chess game. After that, your progress is inevitable.

If you can't afford any lessons, here is the excerpt from very good article on how to improve:

Play a lot, analyze your games, and primarily study tactics. Your knowledge of openings, endgame, middlegame, etc. will come from analyzing your games and going over grandmaster games. Only study one of those specific topics if it is clear you are specifically losing because of that topic.

I switched to blitz for 2 months when I began to stagnate in rapid, jumped from 1250 to 1500 in a week when I started playing rapid again. So I recommend it

Idk wait it out, after this you’ll prolly gain a lotta rating

+ try playing long tcs like 15+10 then changing back to 10|0 after a couple months to boost your rating

He posts the same message everywhere. Idk if he's legit but I'm pretty sure there are rules against advertising your services in the general forums.

Koh-i-noor

I've seen him before.

PromisingPawns

Two months is no stagnation. I have been stuck for more than 4months

Thanks for all the help!
