Igor Smirnov's Courses worth giving a try?

Sort:

Hello Chess.com members, I was browsing the net to look for some good options to invest my money to improve my Chess tactical and strategic skills. And I came across Remote Chess Academy by GM Igor Smirnov. I have seen the summary of his courses on YouTube and they looked quite good to me. Can anyone assist me with regards to this, someone who has already bought the course? Thanks a lot!

Can anyone help me with this?

I have seen some of his free videos and he is a good teacher. Try them.

Just because you check files with an antivirus program doesn't mean something isn't malware. The hackers are often one step ahead of the antivirus people. Downloading pirated stuff is very risky, in addition to being illegal.

i like his free videos on youtube, but his website reminds me of 2002 when everyone was selling useless ebooks with that kind of webpage with one liners and lots of bonuses, it puts me off.

Well, true. But I just collected enough to buy one. There are both pros and cons regarding the courses.

Every course contains just few page of text in 4-5 lesson, and in total 10-20 pages. Then there are few hundred exercises with answers where you shall indicated the correct move.

The content is not bad, but nothing especially.

Hi! As someone who has tried his course, and as a beginner I really liked the video lessons (which are organized in 9 chapters and each chapter has 4-5 videos spanning around 30 min each). I feel the videos are great lessons that go into detail and show the thought process of a grandmaster. I really feel I will becime a better player after this. My suggestion is to give it a try!

Why not? So the OP can blow 700$ bucks on them?

I have them, and i have to admit i actually enjoy them.  He does not give you ant secrets, or magic bullets to success.  I think its just the way he explains things.

I have several, but he seems very dogmatistic about his rules he teachers so I prefer to learn from other sources.

He is tying to sell "his system" so he is true to it.  It isnt perfect, but i like how he explains things.

I studied the video courses: "Your Winning Plan" and "Winning the Middlegame". They focus on thinking, planning (based on pawn structures, forcing moves and centralization), analysing, how to find candidate moves and how to select among them. I have watched the courses several times and they "spell it out for you". Having read some of the best books on middlegame play, that did not spell out a clear and simple algorithm for middlegame play. Now I know how and when to "use" a weakness, how and when to "create" a weakness, how and when to centralize a piece and more. I think these courses are among the best that I ever saw. I don't say they are the holy grail. But they gave me a serious understanding and fundament to continue studying the thinking process in chess. Now I am reading Pump Up Your Rating, A. Smith and Chess Strategy for Club Players, Grooten, that also has focus on the thinking process and it's importance. And I am convinced, as said in the video course, that chess is all about the ability to think, more than a having a huge amount knowledge. So one should practice with the ability to think and analyse in the same way you practice with tactics Smile
