Puzzles donβt really work for me cuz im in a different mindset in a game and a puzzle. In a game im looking for positional advantage and in a puzzle for checkmate or material

Material can (by itself) lead to checkmate or positional advantage. You can then aim more power to weaknesses than your opponent can muster for defense, take advantage of hanging pieces, force a defender to be covering too many pieces, pawns, or squares, etc.
Analyse your lost games. That will help you to identify tactics you missed. You will remember then and avoid the same mistake in the future and also exploit similar mistakes by your future opponents.

Believe it or not, puzzles are really helpful. They may not seem to work, but they helped me a lot. Consider doing them more, or just analyze a lot of games. For me, tactic ideas often come, when I check the position 2,3 times and think of some possible moves, if thatβs helpful.
