How did my opponent get extra time?

Sort:

So I'm losing to this guy. But his time is at 1.3 seconds or whatever. His misses mate in one and does a terrible move which allows me to escape. But for some reason he suddenly has 7 seconds on the clock after his bad move. WTF!!! This is not the first time this has happened to me. Actually this has happen to me at least 5 times. The bad connection stuff I get it. But extra time on the clock no way. This was not a increment game. Crazy I honestly can't recall me being rewarded with extra time. Somebody explain to what's going on.

From what I heard it has to do with the connection. He wouldn’t see it on his side, but you see it. Just like you have never gotten any extra time, but your opponent has probably seen some pop up on their side. I have seen it happen when playing against some countries that may not have good internet in some parts. This is just what I have heard from past posts.

It definitely is a heartbreaker in a tight game.

Why did the clock times suddenly change? The clocks seem broken!

Don't worry - the clocks are not broken. This jumping is caused either by Internet lag, or because of bonus time. Here is how lag works on chess.com:

You make a move, the move gets sent to our server, & then your opponent's computer. We adjust the clocks dynamically so that neither player is "charged" for communication time - but rather, only for the time actually spent thinking.

Understandable, but its part of online chess.

LSChess

It is cause of the lag

Ya, I just lost to a person who was magically able to move 5 times in .5 seconds. Totally lame.

Time issues. Lag or chess connection is false! If there is internet connection issue or lag issue etc. you cannot have a logic response from your opponent is impossible for your opponent to guess your next moves. Chess.com choose who can win or loose and charge you for your ego more money on your membership I’m recording as much games as possible.

It just happened to me twice

I recorded it , not sure where I can share the video

I play from an Indian internet connection and will get disconnected 3-4 times during an ongoing games. It is impossible for me to do anything to fix this but it really hurts my soul

It's normal. In addition your recent games were increment ones so time is added to the player's clock after each move.
