GM lessons

My country has a pretty small chess community but there are some strong players here. Our top player is a Russian -born Irish GM named Alexander Baburin rated 2540ish. I just read a review of his book 'Winning pawn structures'. The reviewer Jeremy Silman, gives a really good review and praises Baburins approach to teaching. I had a weekend lesson with GM Baburin some years ago and they really helped me. After reading the book review by one a revolutionary bookwriter/teacher Silman, im begining to think i am missing a good oportunity to improve my game to where i want it to be. The GM lives close to me and well, i think its time for me to invest in some one to one lessons. Some of my friends studied under GM Baburin and are all strong players who have represented my country. I think some lessons are definatley the way to go since im pretty serious about chess.

My question is to you guys, do you or have you taken lessons from a GM? If so, did they help you much? What were the pros and cons? Would you recommend a series of intensive lessons or weekly ones!? All thoughts and ideas welcome. If anyone here has taken lessons from him please let me know what you thought as there are quite a few Irish players on this website.

I don't think many people have had proper GM lessons, I certainly can't help with any advice. However, if you do choose to go for these lessons, you would have the oppertunity to write a good chess blog on this site, something I would definitely read. Anyway, good luck with your game.

Who did you take lessons with chessfanforlife? What aspects of the game was concentrated on etc etc?

I think GM lessons would be awesome other than the fact that they are very expensive.

I took a 60-minute lesson from a well-known IM last year. My rating did not go up in a day, of course, but it was eye-opening. Pro: Their chess vision is like a surgical laser. Cons: $$$/hour. I'm not sure what's the most effective way to use a coach. They found enough flaws in my game in 60 minutes to last me for months. I will probably see them again if I feel like I'm not sure what to study or train next.

I personnaly bought videos lessons from a Russian GM. This guy not only makes video lessons but gives you along with the video lessons pratical tasks to pratice what he has taught you. One course is about 2 or 3 months work if you do it seriously. Here's the link:

I personnaly bought the Gm's secret course in the first place, and I went from 2050 to 2252 (on chesscube website). Other courses are pretty well to but this one :http://chess-teacher.com/course#oid=1111_1  is the best to begin with I think. I worked 2 and half month with it so it's not so expensive. More importantly, it works! Hope this helps pal!

If you're serious about improving you won't go wrong with Baburin
