No contest, Anand is good but Fischer was a genius.

Fischer was a genius. At 60+ there's no way he could've beaten the very strong Anand of today. I say Anand would've won such a match easily.

How would they agree on the table, set, lights, shape of the room, public record or secrecy of the games, money, ..... With other players, a hypothetical would be what if they lived at the same time. For example, some weak masters or experts today like to think they could beat Morphy. With Fischer, the very idea of him playing in public since 1972 was nearly wholly hypothetical. His 1992 match with Spassky was an exception. He was able to have others call him world champion and make money. If he had actually played Anand, there would have been no assurance a match would have been completed.

I am a big fan of Anand. However anybody that thinks he could have beat Fischer at 960 chess are just dreaming. Nobody, I repeat nobody had a greater chess mind than Bobby. A 12 game match Bobby would have won 9 to 3. -SIX

It's too bad Fischer died before this could have been played out. This would have made the chess world explode, and the media would have played attention to chess once again.

Oh yeah, Fischer would kick ass in 960. He's older and less sharp but he's the greatest all-time in tactical thinking.

Fischer showed in 1992 that he was still capable of brilliant chess games. He also showed that the overall quality of his chess was NOT consistent with the top levels of that day.

Fischer would have gotten creamed.

Fischer in his prime against Anand in his prime... that would have been a great match. Fischer in his 60's against Anand... might very well have been painful to watch.

It's a clear no-contest. I even tried it on Chessmaster a few years ago, and Anand won. However, Fischer also brought an aura to the table that might have intimidated Anand. I believe the two are the fastest thinkers in the game and a rapid series of games with both at their prime would have captivated the world.

I think it would be rather chilling to play a ghost. I think I would allow him a smothered mate, and then add a well timed request to put in a good word with the big man.

The real question is would Anand beaten Fischer in 72, Fischer would win hands down.

It says there that before his death....

The greatest Bobby Fischer

In a normal Chess game, in my opinion, Anand wins.  But, in a 960, or Fischerrandom Chess game, I think Fischer would destroy Anand.

I have no doubt that Fischer would have beat Anand at both types of chess. There never was before and never will be another chess genius of Fischer's caliber. Even Paul Morphy, Capablanca, Samuel Revhesky , Akiba Rubinstien fall short!!!--SIX

Look, Bobby Fischer was a great, maybe even the greatest. But, he was also a big crybaby. The match would probably never have taken place, he would have argued stipulations all the way until Anand kicked the bucket. Though a match up there would be the mother of all contests...

Bobby Fischer was not yet Bobby Fischer when Tal beat him in the 50's.

Tal was no longer Tal when Anand beat him in the 80's.

This proves nothing.

It is the province of great men to have great faults.

Well, I have great faults, so that means I must be...well...draw your own conclusions.

Unfortunately, his great faults don't prove him a great man... his OTB play does.
