Playing chess can make you smarter by improving memory, boosting IQ, enhancing problem-solving skills, increasing creativity, developing perspective-taking, and protecting against dementia. The game involves memorizing various moves and strategies, which enhances both visual and auditory memory, and studies have shown that it can lead to an increase in IQ scores. Chess requires critical thinking and planning several moves ahead, which improves problem-solving abilities, and it encourages creative thinking by finding unique solutions to complex problems. Additionally, players learn to anticipate their opponent’s moves, improving empathy and social skills, and engaging in mentally stimulating activities like chess can help maintain cognitive function and reduce the risk of dementia. So if you're thinking to quit chess read this carefully before you consider as chess can not just make you smarter but also other benefits and if you like chess, keep it up as you can know that chess can make you smarter!

Chess doesn't really make you smarter, it's just that if you're smart, it'll be easier for you to learn how to play chess from scratch, but I'm pretty sure that Magnus Carlsen has an IQ no higher than 115

I think it exercises your spatial reasoning and strategic thinking skills, making it useful if you're in the military. See this post here: https://www.chess.com/forum/view/community/chess-veterans
