Depression because of chess

Sort:
Ivan-Makhnyk
I play chess more than one year. The highest rating I reach was around 950 by playing London and then I down to 700 and stuck.
I watch a lot of videos about starting, general rules, blinding etc, and it doesn’t help me.
Maybe I am so bad because of tired ( most game I play after work ), or I am just really stupid, I don’t know.
Can some one like me, without high iq reach 1200 and play a little better? Or chess is only for smart people?
The biggest problem, when I started to play accordion to debut rules, in most games I can’t finish my opening, like in videos. People’s moves are always different and game becomes in out of my control.
When I play with bots, it feels easier than playing on 700 rating, because I see my misstakes.
I started to feel that I am too stupid for this game and don’t feel fun anymore. Too many looses…

Relax, it's a game. It serves no purpose other than to derive pleasure from it.

When you win, you have won a game of chess. When you lose, you've lost a game of chess. Nothing else.

Enjoy the beauty of this game.

Some people are interested in improving. If you don't have any concrete tips or help for this person, why come here and waste everyone's time? If I want beauty, I'll go to an art museum. Telling someone to "relax" is not only useless, it makes people angrier.

You're feeling burnout. Simply take a break.

Play one game as white and black per day and review whichever one was harder thoroughly through the game review. If you win both, great. Win one and lose one, no harm done. Lose both, no sweat, come back the next day. Don't strain yourself by playing over and over, pressuring yourself to win back lost rating points. It feels a bit like gambling -- you click play in hopes of a win but it slips away and you want to play again and again... Don't, cause that's how you lose 200 rating points in a week

Speaking seriously and respectously,Depression can have diverse causes.About to frustration that you detailed, thats would be asociated maybe with the feel about selfstimation. On myself personally in a part of my young I feeled the need to be strong and self controlled.Thats motived my introduction to sports like Martial arts and Bodybuilding.By different reasons our istinct suggest to us experiment things.I opine is important in first be sure if really like activities that you decide learn,or if is by other causes.(show others our own skills or demostration to anything by any reason).First identify why you want learn anything. If you really love the activity enough to decided study more,is good thing. If not, dont worry, the practice make miracles. But in case that you specifically, likes to learn by the reason that you really love seriously the activity, forget bad vibes and sail calm on the ocean of chess or whatever.Try tactics and strategies.Take notes. You can have personal daily book to express self emotions, details, movements that make you gain or lose...and all you like.A diary is very recomended by everything you like.Enjoy the adventure. But be sure you really love Chess. If really loves ,all in periphery of your dear hobby is secondary, includding ranks and score.Obviously we all want to be better, but be free of a word that I use frecuently : Snobbishness.Snobbism is sadly used to mind control of people by specific use of marks, styles, and things asociated to obtain more high category and social separatisms suggesting that marks styles ,or separation by categories can make us better people or socially distintion, as example.Be yourself. You can use the scientific methodology of empiricism also in Chess.Proof and error.Enjoy wons and losses and learn

Above all else, for most of us, chess is a hobby. It should feel good while playing. You are playing a ton of games every day. I tried doing that for one day long time ago as an experiment, and it went as expected, it felt bad, even if I was winning. My advice is to play much much less, but then try to gain the most out of your games by analyzing.

In any case, keep your mental health, even if it means stop playing altogether. I wish you all the best. Now on to some chess stuff.

First of all, if I see correctly, the longest games you play are 10|0 ones. That in itself is usually pretty fast for someone who has let's call it a novice chess rating.

I am looking at your defeats. Your remaining times when you lose a game: 8:15, 7:38, 7:15, 8:48, 7:48, 7:45. To be fair, you have 2 or 3 games where you used our times a bit better, but the point stands.

This is an equivalent of breaking one of your legs and trying to win in 100 m dash. You are playing bullet or fast blitz in 10|0 games. You are basically giving a time handicap to your opponents, and those opponents are around your level. If you continue to do that, it is expected to lose most of such games.

I would advise you to play less games, and to play longer games (some people will progress with blitz a lot, but most people will not). Concentrate on quality of your moves instead of playing game after game.

I will try to look through some of your games and point out some more obvious mistakes you are making in some of the next posts.

A snobism example Imagine in a meeting people want appear showing disctinction and intelectualism. So,to the ask about what music prefer ,by want to appear intelectually people express classical author, while weekend shake boddyes with pop dance.Today myself,Hernan Cacciatore, was blundered and lose a match very fast as a player playing by first time.Thats distraction dont make to me better or worst intrinsically. When you liberated of constantly observations and critics you are free and powerfull. And inner Light is saved

One year is nothing ! :-)

First advice - you are playing London system as white. That is a fine opening. The issue for novice players is that they usually fall into a trap. They use it as a crutch and they become automatons - they just play their own moves in the opening regardless of what opponent plays.

That way they will in many cases not be able to exploit bad moves of the opponent that they will inevitably make from time to time.

I am not saying that you should stop playing it. If you like it, play it, but I would play it like once in 5 white games and have a different kind of opening along with it, in order to expose yourself to more pawn structures and positions in general. By playing a system opening like London System every game as white as a novice level player, you basically don't allow yourself to learn broad array of chess positions.

You will probably have some bad results when you add another white opening, but that is how it is supposed to be, especially on that level, and you should be better in the long run.

Don't waste your time listening to advice from chess players, most are narcissistic s-heads. Chess online isn't a very nice game, it's all about ego on this site, don't buy into it, F elo, elo is for the a-holes to brag about.

You had this game in the bag, but you lost it because you played too quickly. You need to make a conscious effort and stop before every move in order to make sure it is not a blunder. You will still make blunders, but it will happen less and less.

Chess can be observed as a proof of patience.I agree that game here was good played to certain point.Patience is the first rule "dont writed" on technical game instructions of Chess.

Here is another game. You played automatically missing a free piece, then you both proceeded to blunder, you blundered a few times in a few seconds.

You can't expect to play good moves in a few seconds without already being a very good experienced player.

This is the main lesson for now. Play longer games, play less games than before in order not to feel bad and try to use your time.

And above all else, try to enjoy the process. I wish you all the best.

aarongull

This game is full of peaks and valleys. Sometimes it feels like every opponent ia cheating. Online chess is more like a video game. In the short term it can be fun but it really does not matter what your rating is.

JogoReal

Rating is not so important unless you want to become the World Champion. Well... Alekhine was the World Champion for decades and he never had a rating. Modern days world champions have a rating, obviously, but their rating is so small compared to the rating of the computer, the telephone, the washing machine, the vacuum cleaner... Who cares?
