Country Chess Tournament (Knockout Tournament)

Hi everyone,

I’ve been inspired by international sports competitions like football and other events where countries compete for the title of champion. I thought it would be cool to create something similar in the world of chess. The idea is to organize an online chess tournament where each participant represents their own country. It would be something like a "Country Chess Tournament".

Here’s a rough outline of how it could work:

Tournament Structure:
• Group Stage: Players will be randomly assigned to groups of 4 (or more, depending on the number of participating countries) where each country in a group will play against every other country once (15 min rapid, or even classical maybe - because of the ELO rating range)
• Knockout Stage: The top two players from each group advance to the knockout rounds all the way to the final

There could be multiple tournaments based on ELO rating ranges, but I'm not sure how feasible that is. We just need to think about how to select the countries for the tournament; we might need something like qualifications.

The tournament would be held purely for fun and participants could earn medals similar to the ones awarded in regular chess.com tournaments.

It would be amazing if the chess.com team could help bring this idea to life on the platform. I believe this could be a fun and engaging way to bring the global chess community together. I’d love to hear your thoughts, suggestions, and ideas on how to make this happen.

(Although it might be challenging to organize a tournament by countries at this time, a knockout format would be sufficient, especially since it doesn't exist on chess.com yet.)

It's just an idea that I think would be a great feature for the chess.com platform

That's a cool idea @AngryAngelo!

There are some geographic community leagues that follow a similar idea to yours. happy.png

Thank you! I will definitely check that out, but as the format itself, will there be a knockout format tournament implemented in the future?

Just like there are regular tournaments now where winners are ranked by points from victories, there could be a knockout format where people advance to the final.
(I'm talking only about the format, it doesn't have to be based on countries)

I don't know of any plans to have it implemented but I agree that it would be a nice feature.

Usually what people do is use a 3rd party website such as Challonge to organize and keep track of big knockouts.
