Classical chess is a time control of two hours per player or longer for the game. Online, classical often begins at a much shorter time control, such as more than 30 minutes per side.
Clocks were introduced in the late-nineteenth century and games were often 15 moves an hour after that point. Before clocks, some players could take many hours for a single move.
In US Chess Federation rules, “regular” (classical) is a total time of at least 65 minutes per player. Quick (rapid) is a total time of more than ten minutes, but less than 65. Blitz is ten minutes or less, but at least five. Games from 30 to 60 minutes are dual rated, affecting both quick and regular ratings.
Just had a quick question to throw out there; I was wondering what a classical chess game actually is? Is it just a chess match where there really is no time limit to the moves you make and can take hours of time to finish? I just want to know the distinction between classical chess games and other types of chess games such as rapid, blitz, bullet, etc.
