I THink New Orleans have some the best players in the world
Chess In New Orleans
As large as New Orleans is, I would be surprised if they didn't have a sizable amount of good chess players.
Untill I joined this Chess site, I was afaid most younger people considered chess to be "UnCool" (This is the age of high tech and video games.) I am happy to see I was wrong.
In Nawlins for the weekend...where can I find a game? Do the street players still play on Canal? Jude?
Do they have some sort of Paul Morphy Memorial Tournament down there? If not, someone should organize one. That would probably bring some big players to town, and stimulate interest in chess (if you can scrape a big enough prize pool together).
Hey Guys I don't know whether you would be interested in playing online chess tournament. But while searching for chess tournament I came across Ourfamilychess.com website. They are organizing online chess tournament for 1st time & the prizes they are offering are amazing. Good chess players are any how going to cover their membership fee in tournament.
You can check long list of prizes from here ourfamilychess.com/index.php/events/eventsdetail/eid/1
I'd like the second the need for some chess orginization in New Orleans. I've recently taken my chess hobby a bit more seriously and I'd really appriciate such a resource. playing online isn't quite the same
Hi
I made a friend in New Orleans back in 1999 - 2002. His name is Ted Lamkin. He tried to promote chess in New Orleans east. He owned a chess store at the Plaza mall in New Orleasn East and promoted tournaments. The store was the best chess store in the state. His tournament was called The Paul Morphy Open.
I recall him saying that he had to get permission from Paul Morphy's family to use the name.
I think this is the perfect tournament name so even if someone starts it up again I would consider using it.
He could not make it a financial success so he ultimately left New Orleans. I suspect he moved back to Florida. I think he needed to contact people such as you guys who would like to see chess more popular in New orleans. It is the perfect venue for chess. I would love to see a chess site like the St Louis chess club. I think this type of club is even better in the New Orleans area. I do not know where they found the millionaire guy willing to pay for such a site.
Man the warehouse district would be ideal for such a place.

I think Jude is still down there. You've got the chess gym guys, too.
Here is a post from Rene Phillps, our resident International master.
Rene Phillips Rene Phillips The Hungry Rabbit film shot scenes on the westbank in New Orleans last week. The film stars Nicholas Cage and has a couple of chess scenes. Rene' Phillips of the Chess Gym was hired to choreograph a chess game for the film. This request set the ideal venue for me to thrill the actors with famous games I h...ad committed to memory. Training Nicholas Cage and Harold Perrineau in chess for the scene was cool.
How can i make Chess Big in New Orleans
