Chess gambling??

Sort:
Xillengold

I live in Las Vegas and am around the gambling scene.

I was curious how many people on this site are into sports betting, or any other kind of gambling because I know that gambling has been a part of chess in some circles.

Also, if anyone has any history or information on gambling and chess that would be really cool to know.

Thanks,

Xillengold

Oh and on a further note I give the odds on the Kamsky vs. Topalov match as follows:

2:1 for the match actually happening

2:1 against Kamsky (sorry Gata, I want you to win though!)

The first and last time I gambled was when I lost $3 playing blackjack in the back of a bus in 7th grade.

A game where you pay an entrance fee for a tournament that goes to a pot where it's usually shared between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place isn't the same as gambling. Chess is a skill based game as opposed to pure luck as in bingo or some other random game like that. There was even a court ruling several years ago that backgammon (which uses dice but requires much skill) and games like chess, darts, and pool, were not subject to regulations under gambling statutes or city ordinances.

I have spend a number of years as a professional gambler. Starting in late 80s early 90s I spent 3 years on a Blackjack Card counting team. I spent about one year on a Video Poker team "now days all the 100% video poker games are gone. Casino's caught on real quick to that", and today I most bet on sports "NFL, NBA, MLB", Poker "mostly online but sometimes in the casino as I do live in Vegas" and Thoroughbred racing.

I am new to chess and just learning but I'll probably bet on that too when I get good enough.

Seems like a great idea. Wonder what the payouts would be.
