If you can get to the level of 2000 ELO then I suppose some teaching would reasonably be in the cards. Otherwise, you'd need to be much stronger to have a chance to earn a living otb.

Chess just isn't very lucrative except for the very few (and strong).

It's tempting to try to live off what you love (chess), to be a chess professional, and the financial part may be more of a challenge than the chess part.

You only been here for three days and now you want to be a professional ?! wow that is a very tall order.

I am playing chess from long time and participated in tournaments also(smaller ones) . But i always played chess as hobby before.

There are few activities that pay as little as chess, forget this nonsense immediately, get an education and a "proper job". At 21 years old you have almost certainly "missed the boat" as far as a career in chess is concerned. Listen to your parents, they have your best interests at heart.

Chess is not about earning money, don't even count on that unless you're already at the top (which isn't the case here).

If you are above 20 years old and not already a strong player (read master level and quickly increasing) you have no chance whatsoever of ever living of chess.

hello,

i know very well that mostly chess players earns when they are top player. Since this site is frequently visited by Masters, I thought they can give me good overview of the earning or prizes they won in tournaments.

i certainly disagree with you.

Best plan is insert a rybka program in your head somehow, so when you look at the board you see the moves that should be done without thinking and you'll have 3200 rating without sweat, and you'll earn the big bucks;)

So tell us, what is your plan for quickly becomming a Grandmaster? Cause if you are 21 years old, have played for a few years but isn't 1400 yet, you aren't exactly looking like Gods gift to chess.

Of course it is your right to disagree with whatever you wish, regardless of informed opinion and commom sense. Carry on.

You should listen to this advice from Natalia Pogonina (chess professional and W Grand Master). At your age and rating you have NO CHANCE of earning a living from playing chess. The problem is that below Elo 2650 +     you will not get the invites to play in the big money tournaments. If (and this is a big IF) you could get to FM level, you might be able to make some money to supplement anther job's salary. {Actually I am 31 and I would like to make FM level too}.

Nowadays unless you are IM or above at 18 (look at all the top 100 - maybe 1000- players in the world) you have no chance. Many of the world's top 1000 are not full time chess professionals, but have real jobs too!

THINK!!

Masters aren't top players! Not NMs as most Masters posting here are, anyway.

It might be my ignorance that i am dreaming of GM but i am not going to quit without trying it. I am not going to quit just bcoz my fellow members think i my too aged to become GM. Every person is different and every person capacity is different. I hope one day i will become example that even aged players can become Good players.

Though i am really glad for opinions, even it is negative one.

Nobody doubts that you can become a very good player (Elo 2300 - 2400) with real dedication. But this is not good enough to make a decent living from chess alone. I assure you.

Scarblac

Of course, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that! Try to reach the best you can, we're all doing that.

But if you want to make a living off of it, there's probably only a few hundred people in the world who can do that, and right now there are a few hundred thousand ahead of you, at least, who are also all trying to reach their best.

For the purposes of making money, you might need to look at something else.

Loomis

Ankitt, you've received a lot of really good advice from several people with experience and knowledge on the topic you've asked about. Of course, it's your choice whether or not to believe or follow this advice, or to try to become the one exception in the world. You have a lot of passion and it would be sad if you spent the next 10 years of your life trying to become a chess professional before you realized you should have pursued a more realistic goal and that you wasted 10 years of your life.

Tricklev

The problem is that people look at chess as if it didn't take as much time, work and energy as any other sport (let's not discuss if it is a sport however).

You won't become top in the world in fotball (soccer for some of you), basketball and so forth if you start at 21, and even if that would happen (which it very rarelly does) it quickly becomes obvious that the person is extremely gifted.

Don't give up on your dreams, but maybe a dream more realistic would be to become a candidate master. No actually, scratch that, give up on your dream, it's unrealistic and you are throwing your life away, it's to late to live on chess, even most Grandmasters make no money whatsoever playing in tournaments, so even if you became one (which you won't) you wouldn't live a rich life. Set your sights on candidate master and get a job.
