Chess.com should be 100% free

Chess.com is a free chess site. You only get charged if you want to purchase a premium membership. I think this is more than generous. The fairest option in my view would be to eliminate all basic memberships and allow only premium members on Chess.com.

I was just kidding about eliminating basic memberships, but I don't understand how getting rid of free memberships would bankrupt this site.

The site is smaller (less hardware, resources, traffic, etc), has fewer staff. They were financed initially, as I understand it, and take donations to pay expenses. It's a different business model and they scale differently.

The number of a available players would drop significantly and if there aren't enough players then the site would likely also see a decrease in premium as well.

I love how this guy thinks he knows how finances and money work. He should try being the CEO of chess. Com for a day

Whilst I've decided against using Chess.com as my main platform, it has enough interesting features that I don't want to see it destroyed in a day tyvm.

So website development should be free? Maintenance should be free? Lessons should be free? Why would anyone put their time and effort in with no reward?

What about lichess?
