Chess.com Lag

Sort:

Hi, does anyone know why chess.com lags so much? My internet works fine, and it never happens with other sites. People shouldn’t lose games because of how slow chess.com is. Thanks

Yeah it’s sometimes like that :/

Chess.com servers aren’t horrible, nor are they good :c

But people shouldn’t lose games because of chess.com lag issues. Then that means there is no point in playing. This is a recurring problem, it isn’t the first time.

There are a lot of connections between you and the Live server. Any one of them could be causing your issues and the path your traffic takes to this site and the path taken to any other site, likely only share a very small number of hops, so comparing the two really isn't very useful.

There are some things you can look at on your end. There are also some setting in live, mentioned in that article, that you might be able to change to get a more stable connection for you particular situation. They site tries to use the best one but it may not always be the best.

You gain time

You never gain time unless it is an increment time control. There may be time added, from the perspective of the clients, but that is just the lag compensation allowance. It's not really the same as gaining time.

nah lichess way less lag than chess.com. I prefer lichess over chess.com in bullet just for that reason.

I have to say it’s seemed much worse recently - and I’ve played here every day for over ten years. Most of the time it’s still fine, even for bullet, but there’s no question there are a lot more ping spikes of late.

I imagine traffic has fallen off some, especially since schools have started up again in a lot of areas, but I'm pretty sure traffic is still elevated a lot from where it would have been had the pandemic not occurred. Play (Beta) may also be a little more laggy, though I don't know that for a fact and will likely improve over time.

yeah but chess.com gives lag compensation.

WRONG!

You are confused with another site that give lag compensation.

Chess.lag allows more players then they can handle on the same moment

To fix lag, just play with a wired eitherntet. Chess.com servers break just like all other servers when they are packed with people. As long as your connection is better than most of the other people on the server, you will have lower lag and therefore have an advantage. Also don’t ask why I think playing chess with a 240 hz monitor would help my chess at all but it most definitely does.

had 4 secconds left in a 3:2 was totally winning poof... lost
this shouldnt have happen i wasnt playing slow, and I have a fast internet connection.
I'm not sure what it use but the protocol handling should be 3:2+lag as time
Its easy to detect based uppon the network data..

umm /ping before playing will show ping (at least in chess.com/live)

Chess.com has lagging issues, but they won't admit it.  Moreover, they ignore comments and suggestions regarding the rating adjustment when a game is lost clearly because of chess.com lag.   It's true that other chess sites do not lag nearly as much (or at all).

RapidMates

Why would you clowns want to fix the lag? It’s the only thing that allows any of you morons to survive against me. As you beg me to trade queens every two seconds you f*** glorified checkers players
