Checkmate By En Passant ?

The possibility of mate by En Passant came up in one of my games. Delivering mate by castling is a rare bird. I just wondered if there are any known games where mate is delivered by E.P. ?... a somewhat rarer bird !

Checkmate by castling is probably forceable in some outlandish attacking positions where there are loads of sacrifices and the king is forced onto the 8th rank, but at first glance I can't think of a situation in which mate by en passant could be forceable - the opponent has to push the pawn at the correct(?) time allowing the attacker to take by en passant and checkmate - it would have to be a collosal blunder! Also, any possible mate by en passant could also be achieved by the opponent pushing the pawn just one square, achieving the same result.

Irving Chernev found one, of course, printed in his The Chess Companion:

I played one such game, which can be found at http://chicagochess.blogspot.com/2010/06/en-passant-mate.html. As I mention there, there was also a game on FICS a few years ago that ended in a mate by en passant, which was published in Chess Life. Unfortunately I don't have it at hand.

So, you're FSR?

I achieved mate by en passant not that long ago (the screenshot that I sent to my friend below):

You have quite a few unread emails.

That's only a fraction of how many I have.

I had a game where my opponent resigned just before I delivered checkmate in the next move. I had two ways in which to capture his advanced pawn and mate, either by bishop or by pawn via e.p., and although I had originally intended to capture by bishop, I might have realized I had a rare opportunity to demonstrate a mate by en passant fatale. Here's the game with the final e.p. mate move added in, names of the innocent removed...

batgirl - yes, I'm FSR on chessgames.com.

what would be the notation for enpassant check? When I tried it, it just wrote bxc3+. Shouldnt there be also e.p. somewhere? I need it because I am just writing chess program. Thank you for answer. grin.png

I researched a bit because I also wrote a chess program, and I think e.p. is optional in the notation (including non-check e.p. captures).

Years ago when I was playing in a chess club I moved my pawn two spaces hoping the other guy did not know about en passant (rookie mistake), and his taking the pawn checkmated my king. But, that was a lowbie ten minute game, and not exactly Fischer VS Spassky.

ik smothered but I wanted also the other mate

if it where nc6 mate, then castling would not have been the only way to mate
