Beating Magnus Carlsen

Sort:

Chess.com is an extraordinary place which provides the Chess player with incredible tools for self improvement. It is widely known that Hikaru Nakamura stays sharp by using the tactics trainer on Chess.com.

Recently, I started using these tools. One of my favourite tools to analyze my games is the Computer Analysis tool. I've noticed that this feature shows me when I have blundered or played a good move. It is said that computers have about a 3500 ELO rating, 800 points higher than the World Champion.

This got me thinking, would I be able to beat Magnus Carlsen with the help of computer assistance?

My rating is already quite high at 1200, so I obviously wouldn't use the Computer every move. But let us say, I use computer assistance every other move. Would this give me enough of an advantage to beat him?

Thanks for the insight.

hm every other move I would favour Magnus. There is a fair chance you may make an error which could not be recovered by the computer in the middlegame especially. Also can you see the computer variation or only a single move? It may form a strong plan only for you to be unaware why it made the move it did, and follow it with something which blows it. You know what the engines are like with their weird lines that humans wouldn't even think of playing.

Mr-StealYourGirl

Calling a rating of 1200 quite high is like saying 1.7m is rather tall.

If you did you an engine to beat Magnus someone would notice your level of performance in the analysis and then be able to figure out which engine you used (based in its "personality").

I bet that if you were to study with the tactics trainer like Hikaru Nakamura, you would be good enough to not blunder every other move

I would put my bets on Magnus. That is, unless you stayed sharp by using chess.com's tactics trainer like Hikaru.

I guess it would take a certain degree of luck. Where Magnus makes an inaccuracy and the engine capitalizes, and puts me in a position where I can keep holding on until it's next move. I think the end game would be where I would be in trouble.

Why would Chess.com lie to me?

Tja_05

Hmm, make it 2 out of three moves where you're using the computer, and you may stand a chance.

If Nakamura doesn't in fact stay sharp by using the tactics trainer on Chess.com, then I feel like I've wasted my time here.

I think that would make it completely winning for me. Like I said, I'm rated 1200 on Chess.com. Using the Chess.com blitz conversion rules of adding 200 to get a FIDE rating, that makes me a 1400 rated player. Therefore, I doubt that I need that much help. I think 1 of 2 moves is enough help to make the game competitive.

If you have a 1200 online rating, thats about 1000 USCF, which is about 900 to 800 FIDE

Carlsen would most likely win imo

For lower rated players, its really hard to understand how much better masters are than you. That's coming from personal experience.

To post 3: when your 1.6 m, 1.7 is rather tall

Then you are toast.

Making up rules again V?  For everyone that doesn't know, V likes to make up shit like this all the time.  It's not true.  His Fide rating is nowhere near 1400.  Probably closer to 800.

I imagine I get lazy when I play people at my rating.  I'm playing a lot of lower rated players and I think it's starting to effect my playing strength.  Just the other day I played someone that has not played chess in over 20 years, and I think, his rating was well below 1000.  I like to teach people though, so I considered this a learning experience for me in teaching chess.  I haven't been doing a good job at teaching someone else that I have been playing who isn't that good, however....

I just played a game just now but I don't think this win really counts.  I mean the guy weakens both his kingside and his queenside, so it's not good to castle on either side and then he lets me fork his king and his queen at the end.  Actually, the knight being where it was was a big threat, probably should have been avoided, but it wasn't...  Anyway sometimes I get lucky, and a lot of times I just lose because the game doesn't end in an instant win and I have to "work for the win" and I end up making a strategical mistake and lose the game.  The story of my life, probably brought on due to playing a lot of lower rated players, but oh well, I should start to get on chess.com more often so I can counter balance this.  He also blundered a pawn in the opening game to so I really don't count this win.  Every time your opponent blunders don't count it as a win.  This game of chess should be a blunder less game! grin.png

To answer your question V, I would say that your overestimate your abilities.  To be fair your blitz rating isn't even 1200, it's around 1100.  You should always round down, due to rating fluctuation.  I'm probably 1400-1500 blitz, or maybe 1400-1600 blitz, seeing how I have fluctuated to 1550 and now am back down to 1500, and I probably would fluctuate higher and go right back down if I just play more...  Also, your rule is just a trolling attempt.  No one is going to believe it anymore because they know you are a troll, sometimes... Just be honest and people will respect what you write.  If you aren't, then people are going to call it the way they see it.  Off to play chess!

Hi Daybreak thanks for the comment.

My reasoning for the calculation of my OTB rating is explained here: https://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/chess-com-rating-conversion-to-otb

And to be honest you didn't actually answer my question. However, I appreciate your insight. You are an important contributor, and a treasure of the Chess.com forums. Thank you.

The comment was addressed to the onlookers. I would not take any advice from someone as delusional as you.

Please note that's important to be kind, and relevant in the forums. There is no need for name calling.
