arrow in chess stats

Next to my ranking on the stats page is an arrow with a number beside it. Some people have a green up arrow, others a red down arrow. Can someone explain that please?
A green arrow shows if your rating is going up (progressing) I believe. A red arrow pointing down is the opposite
I was hoping for a little more specific answer. What do the numbers actually mean.
My best guess is that it represents how many points you are from your average rating, but I just wanted confirmation.
