White has 20 possible opening moves but after 1. e4 e6 White has 15 possible pawn moves 5 knight moves 5 with bishop and queen and 1 with the King. So 41 but does anyone know the maximum in the future.

Hello Hartsville54

I’ve looked into your question about the maximum number of possible moves from any position.

White has 20 possible opening moves. After 1. e4 e6, White has 15 possible pawn moves, 5 knight moves, 5 moves with the bishop and queen, and 1 move with the king, totaling 41 moves. However, as the game progresses, the number of possible moves can vary widely. In complex middle game positions, the number of legal moves can sometimes exceed 50 or 60. In contrast, in endgame positions, the number of legal moves is often fewer than 10.

If you're interested in specific positions, chess engines like Stockfish can analyze and provide the exact number of legal moves.

I hope my response helps. Enjoy your time on Chess.com!
