I was genetalizing, but for the most part, you have to get past the international date line to find new countries that are not directly tied to either the North American or South American continentental plates. In the Pacific, most of the islands east of the international date line are claimed by a country in either of the American continents. French Polynesia is a territory of France. Easter Island is owned by Chile.
