AFK

Well last night was quite an experience.  While playing a good live game and at an advantage my wife calls me because my young daughter was throwing up like crazy.  Obviously I wasn't gonna tell her to wait lol, and of course I left my game thinking I could come back.  But she was quite sick and I had help out.  Anyways I realized I made my opponent wait about 15 minutes before my time ran  out.   I apologized after the game but realized now how many people this probably happens to and that sometimes life's ugencies are of course more important than the game.  Well at least I make my wife think that Smile

Ah, yes.  Interruptions to games due to paternal responsibilities have cost me at least 100 Live Chess rating points, I expect ... ;-)

What does AFK stand for?

Away from keyboard.

I've always found enough time to hit the resign button before stepping away due to an emergency (such as the pizza guy).  It's the courteous thing to do.

Thanks.

Eh, I think that perhaps an emergency like that (i.e., health-related) trumps one's obligation to resign. If I ever needed to take my son to the emergency room, and the need arose during a Live game, I would not care one whit about my chess games for the next few hours... certainly not in comparison to my family and their health.

In some cases, making sure to hit resign might not be the first thing someone thinks of. In such cases, its gotta be acceptable.

Let us hope that we all find our lives and family more important than the game of chess.

It's two mouse-clicks. That's some urgent emergency. I'm not saying there's no excuse, but come on....

Context:

I'm in the kitchen playing chess on laptop, wife says Pierre come upstairs, I  think I can go upstairs see whats goin on and then come back down.  But my 9 month girl is throwing up like crazy, trying to breath at the same time and my wife is freaking out.  I'm not thinking about going back downstairs to push on resign at that moment.  We were playing a 60 minute game, so I figured I had the time as well.

Under most circumstances, I absolutely agree. If the pizza guy shows up, then one definitely has time to resign. But if a dire emergency arises.... Several weeks ago, I had need to take my son to the emergency room. My desire to protect him was overwhelming and became my only goal in life. At that time, I thought only of him, and if I had had a game in progress when that incident occurred, it would have assumed priority zero.

You definitely seem like a great dad (also from some of your other posts). I'm sure your son will find a way to show his appreciation in the future. You certainly deserve it. :)

Many thanks for the kind words! I don't need any accolades; I'm just excited for the future. Smile

i typically only play 30 min games cuz im mentally challenged. but sometimes when i get a completely winning position, my opponent goes afk on purpose right before i make the kill. there will be like 15 min left on the clock, and im supposed to sit there and do nothing to claim my victory... if i tab then i lose due to an aborted game what is that b*#@)%??

That's known as making a von Bardeleben. Even it is possible the guy jumped out a window too.

You mean switching tabs? Several times a guy went afk on me when he was losing, and since I also play long games I sometimes switch tabs to do something else when it's my opponent's turn and he does nothing for a loooong time... and I never had a problem with this. Just check up on it frequently or use dual screen to keep an eye on it, just in case your opponent thinks you're not paying attention and moves just before his clock expires in the hope that you lose on time. If your game was aborted I'd think it's a server problem rather than switching tabs
