Abandoning Games

Why do so many people abandon games instead of resigning or trying to win?

I realize that's sort of a rhetorical question, but wow it gets annoying after playing a ton of 1 and 5 mins games the past few days....ugh.

Okay, nvm, back to the games....

PerryOrne1

Can you say a little more? Perhaps we can have them fix something? @DanDurya

fewthingscomeeasy

Some (it seems many on this site) cannot accept losing. Abandoning should be counted as resigning. People who constantly stall and abandon games should be banned.

PerryOrne1

It sure feels like it. I agree about abandoning the games.

Case 1: They abandon when far enough into the game: You do get the win.

Case 2: They abandon after zero or 1 moves (or something like that) and then you don't. Just wasted time

Yea should make case #2 a default of 5 ELO loss for the person who abandons the game. Maybe 3 loss for case #1 or anything like that to, over time, encourage people not to do it

Thanks.

Don't know why people cry about people abandoning games - if it's well into the game, and they've left because you were clearly winning and you were winning fair, then thank them, they still may have had a chance to win by flagging or fluking a win but have instead GIVEN you the win early instead, I'm relieved when they leave, what exactly are you moaning about? you've been given the points for the win, enjoy the clock running out and actually do what you should be doing which is taking a small break before the next game anyway.

Point 2, not everyone abandons games because they are clearly losing, my Blitz profile, the time control I've played most in, says I've won 70 games by abandonment and lost 36 games by abandonment. Half of those wins by abandonment were around 14 moves of less, probable disconnection. 26 of the 36 abandoned games by me were in 11 moves or less, mostly around 4-6 moves which clearly shows I was disconnected by chess.com, they were say 'it's a YOU problem', but never do I ever get disconnect from any other site, pretty hard with fibre optic to premises broadband that's also connected to the laptop by wire, but there you go. That leaves 10 more abandoned games, 4 more disconnections, about 6 of them though I abandoned the game, not because I was a bad loser, but because if you play on here long enough you know when you've been screwed over, I wont mention the C word, if I think I've been genuinely beaten fair and square, I resign, you can check my record - 56.1% of my losses have been by Resignation if I believe it to be by honest fair play and I've lost over 1400 games, though I've also lost to many others I suspect but they either won on time or or checkmated and sometimes you are also in doubt.

So many people suffer disconnect issues, the idea to ban people for 'abandonment' is stupid.

@RopemakerStreet. Thanks for the comments no matter how rude.

RopemakerStreet

Nothing in my post was rude, it was explanatory and informative, there are many reasons as to why a game is abandoned and it most definitely isn't always because of rage quitting, as said, I've 36 abandonned games, a good 30 or so of them are clear disconnection with so few moves

but there's also many other reasons, a knock at the door, a delivery, someone's kid crying in another room, you forgot you left the oven on, a phone call, an important message, whatsapp etc etc etc.

PerryOrne1

@RopemakerStreet it was completely rude, those trying to be helpful don't use words like "cry", "moan" etc. Don't try and justify a rude attitude.

I would have thought all of the logical reasons it happens didn't need to be explained.

In 1 minute Bullet I'd say, depending on the day, 30 to 40% of my games are abandoned before one move is played. These reasons certainly come in to play, but I'd guess down in the 5% or less area. Most folks are doing it when they don't like their odds is my guess.

RopemakerStreet

Lol, if you think that is rude you need to get out more, most people are not that sensitive. Of course the reasons need to be explained because people are saying people who abandon games should be banned or in your case, you've actually asked the question in the first post.

PerryOrne1

@RopemakerStreet Most folks aren't that rude.

I didn't say anything about banning people.

RopemakerStreet

most people are not delicate beta males.

PerryOrne1

@RopemakerStreet. Lol, social Media on the internet is so crazy. Anonymity makes folks brave. If you have any other helpful comments please message me directly.

Once almost a year ago, I got paired with an FM in blitz and was playing a very intense game. I ended up blundering, into an obviously losing position when my internet went offline for some reason. Probably one of the only times that happened unintentionally, but still, glad I didn't get insta-banned. And people with shaky internet likely experience this more.

PerryOrne1

Totally agree, that isn't a solution. I don't think anyone should be banned. Some percentage of it is just accidents that happen to all of us.

RopemakerStreet

I don't use social media, this isn't social media, it's a forum for chess players, one where you given honest opinions to honest questions, I've no interest in sending you a personal message.

It is against our policy to abandon games. If you report them for purposely delaying or abandoning reach out to us and we will remind them of our policy and escalate if needed.

Reading the House Rules, accept and respecting them, is the first thing anyone should do, before attending and using services. It would save a lot of unnecessary recriminations, among other things.

Having said that, it often happens to me too that the opponent abandons as soon as he finds himself in a bad situation, and very few times had he shown connection problems during the game. It is clear that, apart from exceptions due to real problems, this is a manifestation of a wounded ego. It doesn’t bother me at all, but it's like saying, "I don't give you the satisfaction of recognizing your victory."; or, it's a gesture of annoyance at having lost. Either way, it seems pretty childish.

If I accidentally disconnected immediately after losing my queen or rook, I would send a message to my opponent later, something like: "Disconnected, sorry. Well played".

I just had a 10+0 game show up on my account as "abandoned" with a 16 Elo penalty. I never play 10+0, and I never play live chess on my phone, but all I can think happened is that when out running, I accidentally caused a game to start.
First, it's way too easy to start games on the phone. If I could disable live games on my phone, I would. It's like a "butt call", but even more likely.
Second, games abandoned with zero moves should not have an Elo penalty. This doesn't do anyone any good. The person abandoning is now under-rated, and the person winning is now over-rated. This affects future match-ups, and how many points players receive in those. It shouldn't be about butt-calls.
