A lot of people are getting mad because "I play too slow" for their taste

"I have had the most annoying game playing with you."

That's what my last opponent said to me, right before I mated him.  My clock was at 5:18, while his was at 14:27. And I read that quiet often. I mean, most people don't phrase it like that, but a fair amount of them tell me to hurry up somehow. I'm still a beginner and had a lot of trouble with my time management when I played like 10 minute rapid games, which is why I started to play 30 minute games. And it really helped me. But so many of my opponents feel like I waste their time or something, just because I actually try to make good use of these 30 minutes that I have. So why are they getting so angry about it, when they themselves agreed on to playing a game, that could possibly take up to an hour of their time? I just don't understand the logic behind that. In the end, I'll still play the way I play, but the attitude from this last guy just really p***ed me off. So what's your experiences with this issue? Is it just a "low elo" thing, or do people in general tend to having no patience? And if you are one of those players hating against player like myself, please enlighten my and tell me, why choosing long games, if you're not actually willing to spend this time in a certain game? Or maybe I am in the wrong and just not acquainted to the unwritten code of conduct, regarding the right and respectful use of my time limit when playing against other human beings?

Anyway, I hope some of you are willing to share their two cents with me.

(If inglish bad, ples sori, me no nativ speeker huehue)

I personally don't play anything over 10 because that's too slow for me but if the other person agrees to a 30 minute game that's on them. The only time it might be a little understandable is in the opening. The first 10ish moves should be relatively instant in most cases. Going for a big think there might be off-putting but still its their fault for agreeing to a long time control.

Just switch off chat, problem solved.
Of course you should use all time allowed by the time control.
Even better than 30|0 is 15|10: thanks to the increment you always have time to win a won position or draw a drawn position, so you can use all your time down to 0 by move 30.

As long as you didn't abandon the game and kept your opponent waiting, then you are not doing anything wrong.

Yeah dunno why those people don't just choose shorter tc.......100% you are doing nothing wrong.

Any advice for long games?

Using just the right amount of time

This is a quote from a strong NM on another thread.

I actually did that before I went to the 30 minute format. The increment is nice, but the 15 minutes were still to little time for me somehow...and playing almost just on the increment, well, I'm just not experienced enough to make adequate moves when the clock starts biting into my arse. A good format none the less.

I would never do that, immature and not very classy in general. And also really annoying in longer time controls.

That kind of stuff can also be reported lol, agree that it's super annoying in long tc's and unfortunate bc it discourages those tc's

It's to your advantage if your opponent is getting upset.  If they're fretting about your slow play, they're probably being distracted from the game.  There's a psychological aspect to chess if you can find your opponent's weakness.  This is discussed somewhat in the book "The Complete Chess Swindler."

Okay i dont like to keep my opponents waiting AND i really dont like waiting but in fairness its a good tactic to make youre "stressed" opponent resign

I had a 15/10 game my opponent played ridiculously slow, to the point I thought the game was going to be a time out win. At 59 seconds left on my opponent's clock, he came alive with a venegance like a Bullet/Blitz player.

I won by checkmate with 12:05 left on my clock, my opponent had 49 seconds. My opponent was obviously using this game for Blitz/Bullet training. Frustrating for me, having to wait out the intentional super slow play 12+ minutes & then blazingly fast.

Coolchesstylo

Look i just played a game in blitz 5|0 and my opponent was losing it was going to be checkmate in 2 moves and then he wasted three minutes because he didn't want to be mated *sigh*

Turn off chat, I did, and shortly after I hit my all time high in rapid chess. I have even turned it off in daily.

Even the chess.com bots can't talk to me during game now.

They have bad time management, and are wrong. They signed up for that time control themselves. If they wish to play shorter games, they could play blitz.

My chat is disabled during games, I advise you to do the same if you wish to focus on your chess. It is distracting to chat during games in any case. You don't have to of course, but I can imagine some people will send you these unwanted messages.

There are a few clubs dedicated to slower time controls with regular events. You might want to check out the “Dan Heissman Learning Center” or the “90M+30S” clubs as a couple of examples.

Bad people use attentional distractors like chatting to win at chess they're so good at it they can even get the Rolex off your wrist whilst you're wearing it.

I had a 15/10 game with an opponent rated around 890+. My opponent played ridiculously slow, to the point I mistakenly thought the game was going to be a time out snoozer. But at around 59 seconds left on my opponent's clock, he came alive with a venegance like a Bullet or Blitz player (I've never played Bullet or Blitz). I ended up winning by checkmate with 12:05 left on my clock, and my opponent had 00:49. My opponent was obviously using this game for Blitz or Bullet training. Frustrating for me, waiting out the intentional super slow play for about 12+ minutes, and then blazingly fast. But it's within the time format although unappreciated. He was pretty good beat me plus a rook on a combination exchange, and had an out on my checkmate of his king but missed it, probably due to the self-imposed speed play.

If that was the case and he really tried to train blitz & bullet in a rapid game...I might be a little off here but I don't think a Usain Bolt became one of the fastest sprinter by excessively training nordic walking instead on focussing on what he actually does; running fast xD

Sure, playing slow will help you to get better playing fast in the long run, but making up a strat for about 14 minutes, just to "blitz" the last minute, doesn't really portray what a blitz game is about I feel.

I actually like the chat and had some funny and wholsome conversations, here and there. Honestly, the fact that they're telling me to hurry up doesn't really bother me, as long as they stay civil and somewhat polite. It's just the fact that they seem to missunderstand the concept of a longer time control, or they really have no clue how long an actual classic chess match takes and that the simple fact, that 30 minute time control is still considered to be "rapid chess", doesn't mean I have to play as fast as possible. And sometimes I then use the chat to tilt them a little more, if they start to get annoying, which can be fun I admit lol.

Thanks, I will take a look into it!
