I was playing my opponent, and as I got very close to winning, the game said it was a draw. why?

Because you left your opponent with no legal moves and he was not in check.

That is a stalemate, which is a draw under the rules.

That is undoubtedly very annoying to you.

However, as you get better, you will realize that the rule adds a lot of complexity and beauty to the game.

You promoted a queen, so white gets stalemated, no legal moves, nowhere to move.

To mate your opponent, you need to give check.

Instead, promoting to rook or bishop also stalemates.

However, magically you could have promoted to knight, 49...g1N#, and this is actually mate on the spot.

Missed it, bro.

Should have promoted a knight, with mate.

Oops, I am in a hurry, the white king flees to g4, but still 49...g1N+ wins easily.
