The best Stalemate

Sort:

There is no moment in chess which emotionally tops stalemate, for either player. It is a brief moment of "OMG", but stalemates can be cool too. Take this 5 minute blitz I just played on live chess. I can't post the whole game because it is long and I'm having trouble opening the PGN with notepad, but here is the final position:

Yeah, chess players need to be awake. Sometimes I make my moves late at night and I don't bother looking too much at the position and make a bad move. Othertimes - late at night - I look at the position and decide to take another look next day when I am more awake, and that is often a good idea.

Anyway in the position you posted it was moving the pawn to f2 that was the blunder. After that move black can not escape a draw. So that was the point where black was not awake. Take a look at the following, there are also some variations if you click on "MOVE LIST":

The greatest stalemating combination ever was seen in a game between two computers, Shredder-Gull, 2013. Set up the position after 44...Qxa4 and have a look.Ā http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1714659

f2 wasn't really a blunder. Black could have simply captured the rook with the bishop and would have an easy win.

Capturing with bishop is still a stalemate.
