Post Your Accidental Checkmates Here!

Sort:

There is one thing in chess more embarrassing than overlooking a checkmate in one move: playing a a mate in one but not realizing that it is in fact checkmate! Fortunately, accidentally playing a checkmate is pleasant surprise whereas falling victim to one is a depressing surprise. For a while I was under the impression that failing to identify a move as checkmate in an uncomplicated position is only characteristic of a beginner.

And then just today during a blitz time scramble, this happened:

The reason I did not display the entire game is that no human being deserves to be subject to the sight of my horrendous moves.

Post your games where you played a checkmate without realizing it was one!

I still have nightmares about that game. But it thought me a valuable lesson: never underestimate your opponent!

Your  opponent must been in severe time pressure to have missed 35 .. Rxf3

That can be your excuse too 😉

Rubbish! I always play the Bongcloud...

Hmm... not sure whether to believe... well then. On that other forum you might remember me, with my forgiveness essay. I recently played a bongcloud-ish opening, and I won in 29 moves.

(Note: Chess.com is officially broken. According to chess.com explorer 2Ke21-0 has NEVER played the bongcloud, but this is certainly false. King Lenny would never lie.)

Did you make up that rule at the end?

Three years ago, I made a move which I innocently did not realise was checkmate - I had planned the move as a regular fork of the king and a bishop where I would proceed to capture the bishop and then lose on time (I had 3 seconds left versus my opponent's 16 seconds in this 1|0 bullet game).
