Fun! Two more positions to consider adding, Head Coach and Tight Ends. I think OL for pawns is good. Head coach for the king (he's the mastermind, right?). I'd say tight ends for the Knights as they do blocking and attacking well. WR for bishops as they are best long range. Running back for the rooks.
I thought about defensive positions but it just doesn't match up well. Do offense for each. I want to see pictures when you finish!

I sometimes play weird games of chess with my friends, substituting the pieces for different characters.
Hacker Chess would have firewalls as white pawns and Trojan horses as black pawns.
Demons vs. Angels is self-explanatory.
Magicka Tech was a battle between technology and magic, and involved such tasteful characters as warrior mages(bishops) and Krishtoff battle tanks(rooks).
God Factions was inspired by the two series written by Rick Riordan, and involved greek gods(black) battling egyptian gods(white).
For defense:
Pawns=Defensive line
Rook=#2 and #3 cornerbacks
Bishops=Safeties
Knight=Middle linebackers or ROLB/LOLB
Queen= #1 cornerback
King= Defensive Coordinator

I'd make the rooks be the wide receivers, since both line up at the edge of the formation. I guess the knights would be the tight ends and the bishops would be the running backs. 5 of the pawns would be the starting offensive linesmen... that leaves the problem of what the other 3 pawns should be. Kicker, punter, and returner? Third, fourth, and fifth wide recievers?
The defensive set is a bit trickier. I think you'd almost have to adjust it by team, since the best defensive player should be the queen (as the counterpart to the QB, who is normally the most important offensive player.) I'd make the rooks be cornerbacks, covering the WR's on the other side. I guess the safeties could be knights and the linebackers could be bishops, but that sort of depends on who the queen is. If the head coach is a king on the offensive side, it makes sense to have a head coach be king on the defensive side. The pawns could be linesmen, but you again have the problem of "extra" pawns. With 11 starters and a coach, you'd need 4 more players to fill out the slots. Backup players and/or the kicker/punter/returner, I guess.

So Im working on making a chess set for my Dad for christmas with a football theme, Im thinking of Broncos VS Greenbay superbowl. I wan to make the peices designed after players, but Im wondering what positions would be what pieces? Offensive line for pawns, maybe running backs for knights, recievers for bishops, QB for queen maybe? idk about the rooks, any ideas?
