Why do people abort the game even before it's started?
I imagine these are unexpected situations, I've already had to do it twice, once because I dropped a glass and cut myself and another because my sister needed my help and I had to cancel the game. The possible reasons are endless
Maybe because the circumstances suddenly change? For example, you are a 14-year-old teenager, you want to play chess, and here your father calls you to help him. Will you continue to play and help him, or will you interrupt the game without consequences once, and do what is required of you? Sometimes, of course, there are exceptions, but it is their business whether to play with you or not.
Some people abort because they don't like your rating. Some abort because they don't want to play the black pieces. Both are very sad individuals.
Dunno. Lose connection? Didn't want to start a new game but muscle memory kicked in? Don't want to play that colour (some people are childish, others want to practice certain openings)?
People may have different reasons, from trivial Internet problems to urgent family matters. I try to treat such situations with understanding, but I agree that it is annoying. That is why I increasingly play with AI or spend evenings playing other online games. I was advised on one of the forums to check this site and discover the gambling world. After reading several reviews, I chose a reliable platform and a convenient payment system. Now, my evenings have become more varied.
"I've always felt the people that do this should have a penalty point deducted from their rating."
I think you're being lenient. 100 points and a 24 hr ban would be more of a discouragement.
Obviously there may be a genuine reason why someone had to abort, but for this to happen at the precise moment that its their first move, is unlikely.

I get it, you're upset and emotional but that really is not a solution. Nothing wrong with people aborting games before it starts. Everyone has their reasons, why does it bother you? It's 10 seconds.
People like 1000 elo players abort when I play non rated matches. I don't know why. Maybe cause of my elo?
