Typical rating progression pace?

i am at 350 after 4 days and i feel like it is unrealistic to expect 500 instantly and 750 after a week. Idk where you got500 from but considering there are thousands below that I say otherwise. I have been doing at least 15 games a day for the last few days. i have really smart friends and I would be considered smart by everybody I know and still, a standard of 650 ELO improvement in a week is awful

Hi Brock,
I guess I meant once someone understood the rules and maybe had a weeks worth of practice. Of course, even from there - some people take to something well (like any hobby) and some people need to work at it a bit more.
In my experience, I had played off-line for about a month before I created a chess.com account, so that might explain why I landed around the 600 mark straight away.

Make sure you're analysing your games too and solving tactics so you have new knowledge to gain.

I'm also new, about a month into playing, though I did at least learn enough Chess as a kid to know how the pieces move.

If you're trying to gauge if you're improving I wouldn't necessarily rely purely on your rating.

I've actually taken to judging my strength by playing against the bots of different strength. I don't think those are accurate in terms of what your rating should be either, as I beat the 1100-1300 bots handily despite fluctuating between 400-600 in rapid, but at least I can measure progress by when I'm able to beat a bot regularly that I couldn't beat at all previously.

I'm 69 and first learned chess as an 8 year old. I only played chess with my father and sister for a few years, then I played against friends in elementary school, taking 2nd in the school 5th grade tournament. After that when I got in my twenties I bought a chess computer and played that for a few years and then my interest waned for decades. I started playing in October 2022 with my oldest grandson and then I learned of chess.com. I had no idea what to put as my chess experience so I guessed.

I guessed wrong and was assigned a 1200 rating, and I was in no way ready to play at that level. I plummeted in ratings and now I that I have retired I am spending more time playing games, but with little study other than the game reviews. I've ordered a few books and when my books arrive this week I will begin studying game tactics.

So, with the exception of Bullet, my ratings are around 1,000 which I am fine with. If I can stop blundering pieces, my ratings should increase somewhat, but I really enjoy playing win or lose as long as I don't give the game away.

This thread is hilarious! Been playing for three years and have only just consistently hit 700 in rapid 😂 the struggle is real people!??

I have been playing for 2 years my peak is 600 and im currently at around 430.

Rate of progress varies. Age of starting, amount of studying, quality of studying, opportunity to play and learn from stronger players, and innate potential all play a part.

arpad Elo did a study of the relation between chess skill and age of starting. This was a small sample, with international players, for OTB chess. One of his findings was that, regardless of age starting, those who had remarkable talent progressed very rapidly. This highlights the role of innate potential.

I have studied and written about strong players in my city, charting their rating development for OTB play.

a player who became an IM reaches Class A in one year, CM in two years, and NM in three years

several players who became NMs reached Class A in one to two years, CM in two to four years, and NM in four to seven years

i have also looked at players who became CMs. They show similar growth, though with somewhat smaller improvements

after a player plateaus, further progress is possible, but it is slower and takes more and more effort

All this is OTB. Chess.com blitz ratings will likely be more variable and less accurate.

I mean, I have been playing chess for over a year and you're better than me (600 and dropping)

I've never played or even watched chess in my entire 31 years. It always seemed complicated and boring, so I stayed away from it. I didn’t know the rules or really what the game was about. But after watching The Queen's Gambit, something clicked inside me, sparking a curiosity. That eventually pushed me to open an account and finally give the game a try, something I’d avoided my whole life.
In my first week, I’ve mostly been playing a few matches against the bot, with some games against real people here and there. My rating is probably terrible right now, but I’ll update it after a few months once I’ve improved.

500 instantly is a lol. You think a total beginner instantly reaches 500? Some people are so out of touch. I’m 560 and would decimate anyone who has been playing less than a month.

I agree with you, it's complete bull. I'm a real beginner, never ever was I exposed to chess my whole life, never learned anything, played anything or watched anything. I just started playing and learning the basics of it, and have up to now played maybe 40 games of Rapid, I'm at 300 (I started from around 200 I think). I would love to play a friendly against you too see how big the gap actually is.

Vertemes

These progressions make me feel like crap, I'm at 258 ELO and with dreams of becoming at least a IM (emphasis on dreams)

LOSTATCHESS

there is no progression standard in this game at least thats what i think -- everyone is at their own pace mine mostly slow ----very slow---- mostly non movement to be realistic at least up-- 2 years i have been playing at this site and rarely do i get over 200 or even stay at 150 for very long highest i ever got was 350 once for two hours -- either you have it or you don't to make the big leagues 1500 and up -- so i have put that notion out of my head and try to just to play and stay non depressed when i lose which is very often

so my advice is play with a upward mode 10 points at a time thinking in mind but think very slowly don't expect much and you won't be disappointed if only i had learned that two years ago i would be much more along

Sobrukai

I started way down at 150-ish ELO (different account) 2 years ago. It took me about a year to get to 1000 ELO then another year to get me to 1600.

Amidza007

I started playing in july. I knew how to move pieces but that is all, my highest rating is 1021. I get there in 3 months with looking games, litle puzzles and Lot of playing

RickSpeck

I've Gone From 200 elo In Rapid to 1400 In just 10 Months!
