suddenly getting worse and worse

I’ve recently got back into chess and I was doing alright for being quite new to the game, but recently I’ve got into a losing streak and I don’t know how to get out. Does anyone have any advice?

Try to learn how the game works so that you can get better at it.

I know a lot about how the game works (or at least I think I do). I watch a lot of chess videos and I try to learn openings but every time I try I forget what I’m supposed to do and end up losing the game quickly.

You need to be learning fundamentals, not theory. Forget opening theory, nobody at that rating range is going to consistently be playing theory in the openings and rarely anyone who does actually understands the theory they are playing. Instead, focus on opening principles which can guide you against anything you end up facing each game, and give you playable positions conaiatantly. Eventually when you do learn opening theory, knowing opening principles will help you understand the theory you learn and also guide you when you may forget some of the theory at times.

Other fundamentals to focus on- keeping your pieces safe and look for unsafe opponent pieces. What isn't defended in this position? Almost every game you'll be given at least one or more chances to go up material without doing anything but capturing a free piece. If you can avoid doing the same, you'll likely win the game.

Start with mastering those fundamentals and you'll probably get better results without doing anything else.

Thanks. Do you know where the best place to learn those fundamentals would be?

Just google ‘opening principles’.

Learn them, that is easy (3 to 6 principles depending on the author). Apply them, that is not so easy. Check every game afterwards and if you deviated from the principles check the engine if you were right to do so.
