Stuck at 500 elo for well over a year

Sort:

As the title says, I've been stuck at around 500 elo for a long time and I show little improvement. I analyze every game afterward and watch youtube videos. My puzzles have seemed to improve over time but I can never do it in the game. I don't know what to do at this point.

Improving at chess is usually not easy. If you can afford few lessons, I would advise getting a coach. I can teach you how to think during the chess game. After that, your progress is inevitable.

If you can't afford any lessons, here is the excerpt from very good article on how to improve:

Play a lot, analyze your games, and primarily study tactics. Your knowledge of openings, endgame, middlegame, etc. will come from analyzing your games and going over grandmaster games. Only study one of those specific topics if it is clear you are specifically losing because of that topic.

hey, i'm a beginner as well (1450 rapid) but i'm sure i can help you for free, especially considering you seem able to coherently string a sentence together. add me as a friend and challenge me to a 7-day game, and as long as you're able to tell me in the chat why you're making your moves, i should be able to bring you up a few hundred points.

No offense, but how is this possible? I started playing today and I'm at ~700, after winning the first match my rating was already above 500. I'm not good, obviously, so this is kinda curious

Some people don’t have any knowledge of tactics or openings, or even how the knight moves. That’s how there are people rated so low today.

Maybe we can play one or two unrated live chess games together sometime and I could try to help by offering tailored feedback after we play. happy.png

Different people have different levels of natural chess talent. Part of it could also be experience from other games (especially strategy games) and this has helped you with chess, despite only just starting your chess journey. The average rating is also lower than you might expect, so 500 rating after a year or so is certainly possible.

I was in a similar position as you in the past when my rating was stalling at around 500 - 700 Elo. However, I joined the FREE courses offered by ChessMood and their brilliant courses taught by GMs greatly helped me increase my rating:

Good luck on your chess journey!

Get yourself a decent beginners book, go through it slowly on a physical board. Play slower games beside 15 min or longer. Go through every game and notice where it went wrong. Find out in the book how you should have done. 50% play and 50% study incl analyzing. Go through the book again if you do not improve. And when you begin to improve buy another book for lower rated and do the same.

You have poor board awareness. You aren't seeing the opponent's pieces or how your opponent can move. You might want to play the bots on easy mode so you can take back your moves and try again. Easy mode can tell you the best move to play. Once you start beating Wally on easy mode, go back over the bots on medium mode. If you can beat Wally, in medium mode which allows you to take back moves, without taking back moves then try playing people again.

I recommend watching Gotham chess as I did this as a 300 and went up to a 600 in 1 and a half months.Play against people, analyse games and don’t hang ur queen

Here's a small piece of advice from Jeremy Silman: Before you play a move, think "What amazing thing does this move do for my position?". If you cannot answer that question, make another move.

SwordofSouls2023

Also before you make a move, think checks, captures, and threats to uncover possible (obvious) moves for yourself and your opponent.
