You're at the beginning of your journey. Do you play chess because you like chess or to earn points ?

With the rating you don't buy anything, it's not indicated on the ID card, none of those you deal with in real life will judge you depending on whether you have 600 or 1000 or 1400 chesscom Glicko ( not Elo ) points ; you won't be graded on exams based on your chess rating, no one will give you a job looking at that.

Enjoy chess, and don't give the rating too much importance. Watch it once a month to see if you've made any progress or not. That is what it is for. For professionals, it matters something more. happy

Forget about your rating. Its main purpose is to pair you with opponents whose strength is similar to yours. When you win, your rating increases, and you are paired with stronger opponents, and when you lose, your rating decreases, and you are paired with weaker opponents (at least in theory). Because of this, your rating will fluctuate.

Dont forget that you can play unrated games if the rating points are bothering you.

Would it help if I was telling you that any online rating is no actual rating, like for real? Would it help if I was telling you, you've got zero Elo to lose as long you're so subrated like you would not be rated in real life by any Chess Federation? (except maybe some kiddo blitz&Rapid ratings that are worth only an encouragement).

Kaeldorn

I mean, firts get yourself some real Elo rating worth mentioning (1000 and above), then you may begin caring about it. Until then, consider yourself in the pre-beginner stage, "free of charge", it'll be better for your nerves and more realistic.

Don't be scared of losing points, because they are created to determine your skill in chess. If you play a game, you can analyze it later and learn from your mistakes. How would you learn without playing? I recently lost 5 games in a row, and nothing horrible happened, just a bit of tilt. I just take a rest and continue playing later. By the way, I know an amazing YouTube channel for beginners (and not only for beginners). Its name is Chess Vibes. Search for it on the Internet if you don't know it yet.

Make more friends in your rating level (+-50 points) and ask them to play unrated games.

I just recently dropped 100 points in blitz, so I'm playing the bots more now to work on my "chess sight" (which I lose from time to time).
