Hey, I have been a chess player for quite some years and my Dad has played chess for decades he gave me some great advices to questions or queries I had. Now I am going to pass the knowledge to the patzers here. Ask your doubts.

What is the BEST opening for white?
satttva

There is no best, openings are either ambitious or non ambitious.

Ambitious opening for white are either e4 or d4.

I will further cut option and will say d4 is more ambitious at sub 2000 level.

And yes after d4 you must follow it up with c4.

Isn’t d4 filled with theory and stuff?

Yes but at the same time it is more ambitious and fun.

It is fine too, I suggested d4 to players who can't decide. I myself play e4 coz that's what I was taught can switch anytime tho.

Oh. I guess it’s the time management in bullet. I love it though.

Excellent questions and a very complicated one to answer. Let me break down.

1. Calculation - The fundamental chess skill every player must master to play the game well. You become good at it by doing it often. While calculating make sure you are considering not only your best moves but your opponents best move too. And there will be times where you will feel overwhelmed by the number of variations and lines just remember that while calculating even if you are calculating all wrong. Is still worth the effort. There is a lot more and I cannot tell everything here.

2. Making a plan- one of the tricky things to do in chess as it is not as straight forward as calculating lines as there are a lot of chess wisdom is required. See every position has a way to play. You cannot play a position the way you like different positions require different plans and approach to be played well. Making plans come down to Pawn structures if you know a particular pawn structures the ideas and plans then you will be able to play it somewhat well maybe even perfectly. Know your opening plans well. Also overtime you will be familiarized with a lot of positions then making plans in a particular position might even become intuitive. Studying master games is a good idea as well.

Let's just play moves is a very bad habit and must be broken. But nonetheless a good skill to have in your pocket if you are in a time scramble.
