After this post, I resorted to Chess Kids as I figured that's explained simply enough! That, and exploring more chess.com resources, and I found the End Game section particularly helpful for my checkmating issues, which were quickly aided by it. Also making sure to adhere to chess principles and avoid blunders as much as possible, and always keeping pieces protected.
For checkmate. The book "5334 checkmates... by laszlo polgar" is a fantastic resource. Full of checkmates to practice. I would recommend that you start by setting up the positions on a board and play through them. Genuinely trying to work them out. At first without moving the pieces so that you can train calculation and visualisation. But if you still struggle then moving the pieces. It's a great book and as you work through them. You'll start to recognise mating nets. Could even give them names.
