Coach is right, do as he says.
'In order to improve your game, you must study the endgame before everything else.
For whereas the endings can be studied and mastered by themselves,
the middle game and opening must be studied in relation to the end game' - Capablanca
Getting to the end game is easy just trade off all your pieces without losing all your pawns.
But winning the end game is a little more difficult...
Follow the coach's instructions precisely and aim to play as many additional games as possible. This approach will maximize your growth and experience.
Your coach is right. Endgames are the heart and soul of chess. If you understand endgames, then you will be able to play the middlegame better.
Arpad Elo said that a player’s true ability is shown, not in the opening, but in the endgame (and middlegame).
According to Jeremy Silman’s endgame book, you don’t need to study the endgame in depth, mates are all you need to know, but if your coach really wants you studying than I’d say learn about king activity and rook endgames like the Lucena Position and Philidor Position. The Vancura will come with it once you understand that. One final thing, opposite colored bishop endgames. I looked at your ratings so I am looking based on that.
Also, keep up on your tactics to understand your endgames by explanation as opposed to moves if you so need to.
