And, if I remember correctly, he solved it without sight of the board!

The_Riga_Magican

think so

dzikus

Yeah, I read he "saw" the solution while having a walk - impressive chess imagination!

This is however not so rare, I find the solutions of some puzzle in the same way - after some break and without the board or diagram. They are hovewer much simpler than this one Kiss

Sometimes in OTB tournaments I find interesting ideas while having a short rest while my opponent is thinking on his move. I think I just need a "fresh sight" on the position which I get when analysing just in my memory, without looking at the board/screen/diagram

Why promote the pawns to knights  and what kind of puzzle was it....???

MSC157

Woah, nice one!

Mainline_Novelty

The underpromotions were forced to prevent checkmate threats.

4...Nf7 is a blunder according to engines.4...Kg4 will prolong the game but white is still winning. Great puzzle and Great Tal!

If you put the puzzle into Houdini,  it won't find the solution.

I am not stunned to find that out.

Why?

I believe that foreseeing the two Knight promotions is beyond the comprehension of computer programmers.
