Can anyone explain to me WHY Capablanca resigned? I can see a couple scape routes. I continued this game and even managed to checkmate black. It wasn't beautiful, but I did it anyway.

You checkmated whom? Today is not april fools day. After Rxf2 white must exchange rooks and black will win all white pawns. 1300 with black should easily beat Carlsen in this position.

Why would I bother writing a post to tell a lie? I played the game from the point of resignation and, although the moves that followed not beautiful - including a cat n mouse chase - in the end I managed to checkmate. I will check my archive for the PNG. In the meantime, take a deep breath and try to be nice. It really costs nothing.

Sorry for being ironic, but for player of my strength, to imaginate that somebody can find with “objective” analysis sequence of moves leading to checkmating black king, it just sounds very funny. It is very good that you try to analyse games yourself. It can work for your own games. But it will not work for grandmaster games, that´s what engine analysis is used for. Do you have engine analysis enabled? When i clich on game on your post and sctoll down till the end, engine says -6. It means black is completely and utterly winning. I know at 400 level it is not resignable, but at let´s say 1500+ it is. I just wanted to give you the much stronger player view, but choose the ironic way. If you end up feeling insulted, or you will think about what i wrote is on you. Good luck improving your chess. Have a nice day.
