Weird Playing Pattern

What is the view of a member who

- has over 100 games going

- makes perhaps  6 - 8 moves per game

- goes into vacation mode for the fully alloted period time

- within an hour of the vacation expiring, comes back but makes no move

- allows the time to expire again

- resulting in a continuum of lost games due to time outs

- but does seem to play one or two of the 100+ games selectively

- and continually adding new games

There may be logic here but it's the type of player I'd like to avoid - any thoughts on what the objective may be?

Chess.com should consider un-sportsman-like conduct penalties. For example, it should be quite rare that someone loses by their time expiring. With 3 days to make a move, you should be able to get the mouse arrow over to the resign button in plenty of time. A user should be given a poor sport point for letting their time expire. Other threads have mentioned "vacation abuse" in various forms (delaying the end of a clearly lost game). It would be nice if chess.com could find a way to automatically determine poor sport behavior and give out poor sport points for it. Accumulate enough points and you'll start to receive penalities such as a restriction on the total number of games you may have going, or the amount of vacation you are allotted.

In a perfect world we'd all be perfectly reasonable about how we use the features. But there are clearly holes where bad behavior can sneak in and serious thought should be given to potentially policing this. In the end, it's for the benefit of the vast majority of users that we don't have a tiny fraction of people ruining a lot of people's day.

Wow, sounds like the Soviet Chess program to me. Let's keep it fun, its a website not the FIDE. I think getting a loss and losing some points is enough punishment for a timeout. Just avoid players with a high timeout %.

Reservesmonkey, I think the only difference than 90%+ of users would notice is that there are fewer jerks on the site. Smile

Well, legislation rarely controls the actions of the insane, criminal, or innane!  It might be helpful for the metrics section show the number of wins/losses due to time outs - right now, all one can do is scroll down the history of each game per profile which is not very efficient....

I would say Pyrrhic victory or more likely Koyayashi Maru ...

I think the problem for online chess is the timezone of the players from different countries. When someone in America plays with someone from Asia, for example.  It can be assumed that the players are online in the day, so when one player is online, the opponent may be in the middle in his sleep. With that considered, I guess 1 move in few days should be a fair option, remembering that the players also may have limited chances to be online.
