Hello, can anyone recommend a book for a beginner adult chess player?? I would really like to learn the game and it's stratagies.

Hi -- I am 36 (an adult to everyone except my wife), and like the book The Complete Idiot's Guide to Chess, Third Edition by Patrick Wolff.  I also own the book Logical Chess: Move By Move: Every Move Explained New Algebraic Edition by Irving Chernev.  In my opinion, the Logical Chess book is very good, is very rich, and takes time to go through it, but you definitely understand why each move was made in each game.  I am glad that I made the "Idiot" book my first book, many of the reviews on Amazon were good and I can see why.  But they could have made the title a little less harsh.... I agree with KnightNotHorse, "Logical Chess: Move by Move" is a great book to start with.

In a previous post I had mentioned "Winning Chess Tactics" by Yasser Seirawan which I think is absolutely fantastic because of the clear explanations and the wonderful writing style the author uses.  It's the first book I've read that helps me with combinations.  However, the author recommends reading his first book prior to the tactics one:  "Play Winning Chess."  I chose not to read that one, only because it's an introduction to the game and I have read quite a few introductions.  So you might want to try the books recommended above and then try Seirawan's tactics book.  This tactics book is very good as long as you have a very basic knowledge of the game.  good luck.
