Tired of Getting Beat By Under-rated People in Daily Chess??

How about a private club for "rating stable" people?  Before we define this term, let's consider the problem online chess faces that OTB physical clubs and organizations do not.

1)  Strong players can start a new account anytime they want.  There are several reasons many do this that I won't get into right now.  Just be aware that they do it.

2)  Anyone who times out on a large number of Daily games in a fairly short period will be grossly under-rated.  Why did that 1200 player whip you easily?  Because 60 days ago he was an 1800 player.

So, to beat these issues, we just start a private club with a few requirements:

1)  Glicko RD must be less than 70

2)  Current rating must be no more than 100 points lower than the highest rating achieved in the past 12 months.  (Initial newbie fluctuation would be ignored)

These two requirements alone would solve MUCH of the problem with online chess ratings.

I don't yet meet these requirements ; but I will very soon, and what you see (rating) will be what you get when I do.

Is there any interest in a club like this?  Keep in mind the club's activities would be INTRA club.  Outsiders don't have stable ratings.   happy.png  We could hold private club tournaments...with trophies even.

I would join your cub if you promised to not make me an administrator. It is just way too much work. These observations you've made are very perceptive, so perceptive in fact that it might be lost on certain people. In fact, to some extent, I might be one of those people.

I promise not to make you an admin.  You could just enjoy playing tournaments against people whose rating really does reflect their strength.

Requirement #1 (Glicko RD) just insures that people have played enough games recently enough to have an accurate rating.  #2 deals with people who timed out on a boatload of games, and suffered a huge rating decrease as a result.  This decrease does not reflect a reduction in playing strength.  It indicates only poor time management.

Good idea, and start immediately because you need huge amount of members for this to become effective.

Why would it take a huge number of members?  We have 3 already.  happy.png

try Circle of Trust OTB

Circle of Trust deals with a different issue that I'm not concerned about (book use).  My concern is taking huge rating hits by losing to under-rated players.

martinchess1

the players on COT as far as i've experienced are not under rated because the ethos is one of honesty and transparency.

I wanna join do yu have a link for it ?

or tell me whats the club's name is and I search for it

Micah57

@sirjony,

We have an old dead club we can revive if there is enough interest.  I need to do some work on the club pages before I start giving out links to it.  If there is enough interest, I will do that work.  Keep an eye on this forum topic to stay up to date.    Thanks for your interest!

martinchess1

search this, it's the name of the club.

Circle of Trust OTB

Thanks, @martinchess1.  I have researched "Circle of Trust".  I like what they are doing....but I also like "the book".  I don't want to lose just because my opponent has memorized more openings and variations than I have.  The book is one reason I prefer Daily chess.  Besides, "the book" is quite a challenge because it can get you into deep trouble if not used very carefully.  It's a double-edged sword.
