Ruy Lopez patterns

Sort:
Yigor

The Ruy Lopez pattern is the following thing :

  1. the symmetrical dQB-opening on the 1st move
  2. a white knight's attack on the black dQB-pawn and its defence by a black knight
  3. a bishop's attack on the black knight defending the dQB-pawn

This is generally a very good opening in all chess960 games. Here it goes :

Actually, it seems that BBNQRNKR is the first chess960 initial position where Ruy Lopez occures. Sigma gives +0.23 to black if it replies 3.b6 :

Here's the second occurency in BNRQKBNR game, Sigma gives -0.11 to black if they play 3...Nd4 :

Okay, this evening I'm planning to make the list of all Fischer's positions where Ruy Lopez occures!Laughing

If you make a PGN database, it would be a valuable resource.

Atos

Do you really think that every opening where a Bishop occupies a square diagonal to a Knight is Ruy Lopez, or are you joking ?

Yigor

Actually, it's very easy.Cool It should be a position containing one of the following FEN strings:

  • BNQXN
  • NBXQXN
  • NXQNB
  • NXQXBN

Atos, please read attentively my first post to understand what is true Ruy Lopez.Wink There are 4 conditions:

  1. Symmetrical dQB-opening
  2. White knight attacking the black dQB-pawn
  3. Black knight defending that pawn
  4. White bishop attacking that black knight

  5. RBNQBNKR
  6. RBNQKNBR

And what would make this a Lopez and not, say, a Veresov ?

Richter-Veresov is the same pattern in vQB-setting (Ruy Lopez in dQB).Cool

dQB = diagonal Queen/Bishop pawn's opening (e4 in standard chess)

vQB = vertical Queen/Bishop pawn's opening (d4 in standard chess)

bump, to be continued todayCool
