Rotational Chess
Me and my friend played a similar variant of our own invention at school once. Instead of moving a piece, for your turn you could change the orientation of the board. However, we also said that pawns could not queen, they just advanced to the eighth rank and then stayed there until the board was flipped again and they could advance the other way.
I played the King's Gambit, and won ;)
We never played it again.
I just found a variant called rotating chess. It is at http://www.chessvariants.com/fiction.dir/hitchhiker/hg2.html at the "SPACE" section. However, if I'm understanding this correctly, when the board rotates, the pawns already on the 8th rank doesn't promote.
Here's another variant I came up with. After each move (one move for white and one move for black), the board is turned 90 degrees and the directions for the pawns change. Here is an example.
