...but you can't play the Latvian Gambit in Chess960, can you?
Furthermore, what you said essentially DOES mean 'no theory'!
Not unless the board set up happens to be standard at random LOL

I never understood the application of the term "theory" to the memorization of opening moves. To me, "theory" would mean principles and concepts, such as control of the center, development of pieces, material vs. position. If that were the case, then Chess960 would have a great deal of "theory", because memorization is useless, and you have to rely on principles.
So, I understand what they mean when they say "opening theory", but to me it seems exactly the opposite of what the word itself usually means.

Yeah, but each opening also has it's own unique principles to be learned that the memorized moves are based on.

I translate the use of the term "theory" as it's used in chess to mean "testing theories." Each line or variation represents a theory, hypothesis, or idea. The actual play tests that idea.
In other disciplines, theory would be referred to as "the literature." It's the research that's already been done.

Makes more sense than any other explanation I can think of.
Some of them argue no theory, but this isn't really true as I interpret their position. A little much to commit to memory is their real dilemma,(justifiably)...consider all the openings applied to current standard chess....now apply that x 960 times! ....and that's why it will always stay on the fringe of their stronghold over chess. Congratulations to chess.com for adding it ....I sure it's popularity will only grow! ....share your opinion....always interested!
