Decathlon of Chess Variants

If you could have a tournament where the professional chess players should show their genius by playing other 9 variants in addition to the standard chess which would you choose?

Here's mine:

1)classical chess

2)hostage chess : Pieces taken are held hostage and can be exchanged against other pieces and then dropped. Like Shogi

3)losing chess: Taking is obligatory; the first player that loses all his pieces wins.

4)extinction chess: Win by making your opponents pieces of one type extinct.

5)marsellais chess: Move twice per turn (First turn White moves only once)

6)avalanche chess: In addition to your move you advance your opponents pawns

7)progressive chess: white moves one time, black twice, white three times, etc

8)anti king chess: each player has both a King and an Anti-King to protect; Anti-Kings are in check when not attacked.

9)3 checks = win : Karpov's favourite

10)berolina chess: The Berolina pawn moves one square diagonally and may takes by moving one square forward

They're all recognized variants and require the same equipment as standard chess.

Some of these varients are somewhat obscure to some people.  Why not have a game of atomic or crazyhouse?

What would be your list?

Ziggyblitz

No chess 960?  I'd put it at the top of the list.

AFAIK chess960 It's a different setup but not a radically different game from chess but it's OK of course. Which other variants would you put?

I forgot there are many online applets where you can evaluate the variants at

http://www.pathguy.com/chess/ChessVar.htm

and I copy/pasted the descriptions of the variants from

http://www.chessvariants.com/Gindex.html

Chess

Chess960

Xiangqi

Shogi

Losing Chess

Shatranj

After that, it gets really hard to pick.  10 different variants?  There are so many to choose from, but I don't know that any of them really distinguish themselves from any other.

ETA:  At least one "huge" variant, like Tamerlane's Chess or Chu-Shogi

IMO chess 960 is a variant setup but the game in itself is not radically altered .You can have a chess960 setup on atomic chess or losing chess for example.

Shogi and Xiangqi are standalone games with an established tradition IMO they cannot be considered variants of Western Chess

If you're not constrained to have the same equipment as standard chess then you can make selection by category Ex:

1) Standard Chess

2) 1 Different Board Dimension (Pick any grand chess variant)

3) 2-3 Different Board shapes (Ex:Hexagonal, Cylinder, Circular)

4) 1 multimove variant (Ex:Progressive , Marseilles)

6) 1 move opponent armies (Ex:Avalanche)

7) 1-2 different way of capture (Ex:Crazyhouse,Hostage or Atomic,Plunder)

8) 1-2 different way of winning (Ex:Extinction, Anti King, Losing)

Im a little suprised  Omega  chess or Gothic chess are not

mentioned more often, Karpov thought enough of it to

agree to

play a match with fischer(it fell through), a few years before he

passed on.
