'Versatile' is a rather vague concept, and 'fun' is very subjective. But I would suggest the Xiangqi Cannon, which moves like Rook, but can capture only after jumping over one piece (friend or foe). Another suggestion, which scores high on the fun part, is the 'Femme Fatale', which can jump to any square in the 5x5 area surrounding it, but cannot capture anything itself. Instead it 'pacifies' all adjacent enemy pieces, which are not allowed to capture as long as they stand next to the Femme Fatale.
